MUDWIG
In a world where everyone is grappling for their 5 minutes of fame, influential Bristolian artist, 'Mudwig Dans' has worked hard to maintain his underground status. Revered and emulated by many commercially successful painters, illustrators and street artists, Mudwig has a stand-apart reputation, which has grown from his attitude and painting technique. Distinctly non-conformist, his work exists in a realm of its own, spanning media ranging from animation, billboard subversion and canvas and mural painting. Drawing heavily on early 20th century eastern block propaganda illustrations his works fuse these elements with fragmented character forms that invoke Disneyesque/ Dr Suessian impressions. Mudwig exposes an irregular and discontinuous reality, and this off-centred approach to the world around him, perhaps explains why his creations remain subversive and influential. Previous Mudwig exhibitions include 'The Versus Colour Group' exhibition, Switzerland, 'Talking Walls' exhibition at Bristol's Arnolfni and the Hollywood Remix Group show at New York's 'Wooster Arts Space'. Commercially Warp Records, Thames and Hudson and Nike have reproduced his works. The first solo London exhibition of Mudwig work, and his largest to date, opened at DreamBagsJaguarShoes in March. Leave any pre-conceptions regarding street artists/activist at the door.
